Changing demographics of scientific careers: The rise of the temporary workforce

December 21, 2018

Contemporary science has been characterized by an exponential growth in publications and a rise of team science. At the same time, there has been an increase in the number of awarded PhD degrees, which has not been accompanied by a similar expansion in the number of academic positions. In such a competitive environment, an important measure of academic success is the ability to maintain a long active career in science. In this paper, we study workforce trends in three scientific disciplines over half a century. We find dramatic shortening of careers of scientists across all three...

Evidence for a mental health crisis in graduate education (NATURE BIOTECHNOLOGY)

September 2, 2018

There is a growing cry for help from graduate students across the globe who struggle with significant mental health concerns. Despite increased discussion of the topic, there remains a dire need to resolve our understanding of the mental health issues in the trainee population.

Recent research on mental health in the trainee population has focused on within-insti- tution cohorts, such as the 2014 UC Berkeley report, which found that 43–46% of graduate students in the biosciences were depressed, and the 2015 University of Arizona report, which found that a majority of doctoral...

ARTICLE: Optimizing the utility of the individual development plan for trainees in the biosciences (NATURE BIOTECHNOLOGY)

August 25, 2018

There has been increasing interest within the biosciences community on career plan- ning, particularly non-academic career planning. As the number of biosciences graduate students in the United States increases, the reality of obtaining an academic job is bleak. Data from the National Science Board show that the percentage of doctorate recipients holding tenure and tenure-track appointments in the bio- sciences 3 to 5 years after receiving their PhD has decreased from 17.3% in 1993 to 10.6% in 2013. These percentages are worst in the biological, agricultural, and environmental life...
