Departmental Overview

   

As a central service center for the entire campus, the Graduate Division works to guide and assist students from the moment of admission, through the various milestones of their progress, to the completion of their degree requirements. We provide academic, personal, and professional support services that are vital to the everyday well-being and life-long successes of Berkeley master’s, professional, and doctoral students.

As the authoritative resource and chief advocate for graduate education, the Graduate Division ensures the equitable administration of policies governing graduate studies across Berkeley’s 14 schools and colleges. As the administrative arm of the Academic Senate’s Graduate Council, we partner with the faculty and staff of each program and the deans of each school and college to maintain the world-renowned quality of Berkeley’s graduate education.  

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Professional Development, this position functions as the day-to-day program manager of GradPro. Located within the Graduate Division’s Graduate Professional Development unit, GradPro offers advising, workshops, presentations, and administrative services in support of graduate professional development and career exploration to graduate students, faculty, academic departments, and student organizations.

This position functions as the campuswide outreach, advising, and coordination hub for graduate professional development and career exploration resources and initiatives. This position is responsible for promoting professional and career development through outreach, communications, and resource development at all levels of campus, and also serves as the Graduate Division liaison to relevant internal and external partners.

Responsibilities

   
  • Researches, designs, and develops presentations, workshops and programs to connect students with professional development and career exploration resources to assist them in meeting their professional development and career planning needs.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises a team of graduate student Professional Development Liaisons (PDLs) for outreach, advising, and communications. 
  • Develops and oversees delivery of broad and complex professional development and career exploration focused programs and events that incorporate the needs of campus partners and constituents.
  • Provides and oversees advising on professional development and career exploration tools and resources for Master’s and Ph.D. students who are investigating careers within or beyond academia.
  • Conducts professional development and career exploration needs assessments, and collaborates with faculty and other members of the University community to design and launch professional development and career exploration programming.
  • Presents sensitive information about needs assessment results to departmental committees consisting of department chairs, graduate advisers, staff, and senior graduate students.
  • Oversees communications and resource development, and uses thorough knowledge of career exploration resources and systems to improve and redesign web sites and other supporting technologies.
  • Researches and informs senior leadership about emerging trends in graduate professional development and career exploration nationally and within UC system; and new internships and professional development opportunities for Berkeley graduate students.
  • Gives input to Senate subcommittee on policies and procedures impacting graduate student professional development and career exploration. 
  • Establishes new relationships with alumni, corporations and other organizations related to career services for students and alumni to promote experiential professional development and career exploration opportunities and enhance the campus’s relationship with outside organizations
  • Oversees scheduling and use of dedicated professional development presentation space.  
 

Required Qualifications

   
  • Advanced knowledge of graduate academic and professional pathways and employment trends.
  • Advanced knowledge of current approaches to graduate professional development and career exploration.
  • Advanced skills in outreach, partnership building, and collaboration.
  • Advanced skills in workshop and program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations.
  • Advanced written and oral presentation skills.
  • Advanced project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising staff.
  • Multicultural competencies, and demonstrated skills in working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and students.
  • Experience and proficiency using Excel, social media tools, and web content management systems such as WordPress to meet program needs.

Education/Training

  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

   

This is an exempt, monthly paid position.  Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $69,200.00 - $101,500.00 (Grade 22). For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University visit:
