Postdoctoral Associate @ Jackson Laboratory

February 28, 2020

The Carter Lab is seeking a postdoctoral associate  to join our research in the computational genetics and genomics of complex disease (50% effort) and fill a critical role in our training efforts for the next generation of researchers (50% effort). Our work uses novel, genetically diverse mouse models to understand how genetic factors predispose to disease. We are part of the MODEL-AD consortium ( to create and characterize new Alzheimer’s disease models and the OPEN-AD center to translate ’omics data into potential therapeutics. In addition, we are engaged with a growing bioinformatics training program in JAX Genomic Education to teach researchers in designing experiments and analyzing data with advanced mouse models. We employ evidence-based teaching methods promoted by The Carpentries, an international organization with a mission to train researchers in best practices for data science and computing. The Jackson Laboratory provides excellent educational and training opportunities for postdoctoral associates. Exceptional candidates are encouraged to apply for the prestigious JAX Scholar award, which supports promising early-career postdoctoral associates conducting cutting edge biomedical and basic biological research at JAX. The award includes an independent research and travel budget and a salary above our standard postdoctoral scale (

Motivation and curiosity are the two most critical skills in science. The ability to plan, execute and analyze an independent research project is essential, as well as exceptional verbal and written communication skills. For this position, a strong interest in education and in effective approaches to teaching computational biology is also required. Preference will be given to self-motivated individuals.

  • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, or related field is required;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrates self-motivation and ability to be collaborative across disciplines; and
  • Demonstrated writing ability as evidenced by significant contribution/leadership role in bringing a minimum of one 1st author paper from graduate work to publication.

To apply, please submit (1) a cover letter outlining research accomplishments and interests; (2) a current CV; and (3) names and contact information for three references.

About Us

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with more than 2,300 employees. Headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, it has a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in Augusta, Maine, a genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Connecticut, and facilities in Ellsworth, Maine, Sacramento, California, and Shanghai, China. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.

The Jackson Laboratory's 43-acre scenic Bar Harbor campus is nestled between the Gulf of Maine and the mountains of Acadia National Park. Some of the best hiking and biking in the world (over 50 square miles of mountains, lakes, views, and dramatic coastline) is accessible from our campus. We are one mile from downtown Bar Harbor, which offers a vibrant downtown district with a plethora of restaurants, shops, museums, and galleries.

JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
