Call for Schmidt Science Fellowship Applications

March 8, 2023

Schmidt Science Fellows receive a generous stipend and are supported to develop the skills and perspectives needed to accelerate discovery, advance solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, and to become future leaders in science and society. Fellows pursue a postdoctoral placement at a leading laboratory anywhere in the world in a disciplinary pivot from their PhD.

Note that this is a limited opportunity fellowship. Harvard can only nominate a limited number of candidates, so there will be an internal selection process to choose the nominees.

Eligibility:

  • PhD students working across any of the natural sciences (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Sciences), Engineering, Mathematics, or Computing – and all sub-disciplines therein
  • PhD students who expect to complete all the requirements for the PhD between May 15, 2023 and June 30, 2024
  • Be available for the entire period of the 2024 program, from April 2024 to November 2025

Internal Application Process (deadline April 17 at noon):

Harvard can nominate only a limited number of candidates. A faculty committee will review internal applications to select the Harvard nominees.

Please submit the following materials for the internal selection process:

  1. Complete CV, including name, email address, Harvard PhD program, expected date of graduation, thesis title, any leadership positions or community service, and a list of all publications.

  1. Research Statement (specific for the internal review process) that briefly addresses: (1) Rationale for the disciplinary pivot from your graduate work, (2) Plan for pursuing postdoctoral study in a different field, and (3) how the Schmidt Fellowship fits your long-term plans; maximum 2 pages.
  2. One Letter of Recommendation from your thesis advisor.

Applicants can send their materials directly to us at gsasacademicprograms@fas.harvard.edu.
