Career & Professional Development Program Manager @ UCSD

DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Director of Academic Research Scholars, the incumbent serves as the Career and Professional Development Program Manager. The incumbent is responsible for identifying, planning, developing, coordinating and presenting, professional and career development programs, workshops, seminars and other activities in support of the unit's training and professional development activities.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for staying current on training pedagogy; researching best practices; collecting, analyzing and evaluating the program’s effectiveness; and introducing innovative methods and tools to achieve desired campus outcomes. As the principal campus lead on postdoctoral education and training, the incumbent facilitates and coordinates with other campus units and neighboring institutions to strategically and efficiently address the training needs of postdocs and visiting scholars. The incumbent coordinates the annual Postdoctoral Scholar Appreciation events, Chancellor's Mentor and Postdoc Awards, and several other annual special events.

Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career and professional development, advises postdoctoral scholars on a full range of career processes, including individual or group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving job search competencies. Provides a holistic approach to postdoctoral professional development and career counseling, develops and modifies workshops and presentations as necessary; and maintains relationships with potential employers, alumni, on and off campus representatives, and other organizations to establish contacts to meet the career needs of postdoctoral scholars. Performs independently, but may receive guidance in developing new career advising/ coaching services and programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.

  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.

  • Knowledge of university programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.

  • Expertise of best practices for higher education teaching and postdoctoral training.

  • Proven ability to develop professional and career development programs at the university level and understanding of research environment.

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to present effectively in front of groups.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong, ability to communicate with tact, poise, diplomacy, and hospitality with a diverse population of postdocs, faculty, staff, industry and community in a very hectic and demanding environment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must be willing and able to travel.
