[HILS] Harvard Biotech Club: 2018 Review & Leadership Team Recruitment

February 17, 2019

The GSAS Harvard Biotech Club is recruiting leadership team members

Available positions are at the bottom of this post. But first, here’s why you should join

We had an amazing 2018 and would like to thank our industry sponsors & partners, and all those that attended our events. Special thanks to Kelly Girskis, and Rebecca Gibbs for all their work and best of luck with post-PhD life!

  • We've entered our 20th year as a student club! Our mission over these 20 years has been to bridge the gap between academia and industry through hands-on training, lecture-based learning, and profession development.
  • We launched a new program this year in collaboration with the HBS Healthcare Club and MassBio. Activate is a collaborative mentorship program for Harvard students and researchers who are aiming to spin out a life sciences entrepreneurial venture. We started this program as a response to the growing interest in innovation and commercialization among students and post-docs, and the increasing demand for resources that support these interests. Our goals are to: enable scientists with the tools and expertise to launch new ventures, spark new intellectual communities and build bridges across Harvard schools & the Boston biotech ecosystem, and increase the quality, volume, and efficiency of spin-outs from Harvard labs that aim to solve pressing biomedical challenges. Our advisors for the program are trusted world-class leaders in their respective fields of IP, life science consulting, innovation business strategy, and venture capital.
  • The Incubator continued strong into its 5th year, bringing together industry and academic leaders with HBI members who worked together to develop and commercialize a novel drug discovery platform technology. Students and postdocs performed due diligence, crafted a business plan, and pitched the technology to investors and key opinion leaders.
  • Started in 2010, the Healthcare Innovation and Commercialization lecture (HiC) series helps students understand the innovation system while developing a “business toolkit” they can use with collaborators, customers and investors. The 10-week course covers a wide breadth of the biotech landscape including: evaluating ideas and sizing markets, regulatory and reimbursement strategy, licensing and IP, cost analysis and venture capital, all culminating in a final Innovation Day pitch competition to panels of industry experts.
  • The 2018 Patent Law Course was held onsite at Clark+Elbing, featuring a combination of lecture and workshop styles, exposing students to important elements of patent law through discussion of court cases and introduce students with the teaching style common to U.S. law schools. The course was conducted by Partner Michael Belliveau and Forrester Liddle from Jounce Therapeutics. Apply now for the 2019 course with Finnegan!
  • We collaborated with MIT to host Ideation 2018We, in the MIT Biotech Group and the Harvard Biotech Club, aimed to connect researchers to facilitate early stage start-up team formation within our community. Keynote by Vicki Sato, former Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business school.
  • The Alumni Lunch Series initiative aims to invite Harvard Graduate School alumni and experienced leaders in diverse sectors of the biotech industry back to campus to discuss their career experiences with current trainees in an intimate setting.
  • Our Industry 101 Series gave us the breakdown on many different topics, including: business development, biotech investing, biotech finance and valuation, regulatory affairs, tech transfer & IP, life science consulting, medical writing, institutionalized entrepreneurship, and more!
  • Our site-visits are some of our most popular events, and fill up every single time! These provide a chance for Harvard researchers to tour world-class biomedical research facilities, and interacts with the scientists at these various biotech companies.
  • “The Biotechnology Edge” with Amgen was a 12-week lecture series covering all critical aspects of the biotech industry.
  • Networking events, Happy Hours, and HMS-HBS student mixers! Grab a drink, chat, socialize, and expand your network at some of the coolest bars in Boston.
  • We hosted Adam Feuerstein from STAT news, "the most feared man in biotech” with over 75K Twitter followers.
  • We even invited Shark Tank’s very own Kevin “Mr. Incredible” O’Leary for a fun talk on entrepreneurship, just because we could! Will Mark Cuban be next?
  • And, much more!

We are looking for curious and driven individuals to join our team.

We are a group of volunteers who aim to host events and build programs that educate and train the future generation of leaders in the world of biotech and business. Our leadership team members have a proven track record of successfully landing competitive jobs in industry after their graduate or post-doctoral studies. The GSAS Harvard Biotech Club is a supportive, creative, and enabling experience - both for those that are curious and just want to learn, or for those looking to prepare themselves for the next step in their careers.
