Primary Purpose

The Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University seeks applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Biological Education Research to begin in August 2019. This position will advance the mission of the Department, which is to provide and nurture opportunities for understanding living systems through high-quality public education, scientific discovery, and service. The successful candidate will have doctorate in the biological sciences with substantial, documented experience and training in biological education research. Alternatively, the candidate may have a doctorate in Education with substantial formal training and experience in the biological sciences. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Startup funds are available. The Department of Biological Sciences has over 30 faculty members specializing in diverse sub-disciplines of the biological sciences and serves over 500 undergraduate majors and over 40 graduate students. The Center for Ecological Research & Education and the Molecular Research Core Facility are administered through the Department and offer outstanding opportunities for research, teaching, and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active, extramurally funded research program in biological education research, and to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Components of the service obligations of the position include building meaningful educational interactions between the Department and educators in Southeastern Idaho and in forging strong educational collaborations among STEAM related disciplines at Idaho State University. This position will also serve a key role in guiding the  Department’s existing Doctor of Arts program, a unique program through which doctoral students conduct both biological and science education research (https://www.isu.edu/biology/degree-programs/graduate-degrees/#d.en.62326). The Department of Biological Sciences at ISU has expectations of strong departmental citizenship, including student recruiting and advising, and helping achieve the Department’s vision and goals. Teaching responsibilities for this position may include Biology Teaching Methods, Undergraduate & Graduate Teaching Assistant Seminars, Seminar in College Teaching for DA students, Advanced Study in College Teaching for DA students, and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise or other courses in core curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

1.    PhD/DA (doctorate) by August 2019.
2.    Training in Biological Sciences.
3.    Training in Biological Education. 
4.    Evidence of teaching experience.
5.    Evidence of scholarship in Biological Education Research.

Preferred Qualifications

1.    Postdoctoral experience.
2.    Evidence of teaching excellence.
3.    Expertise in another area of biological or environmental science that complements existing strengths in the Department.
4.    A background that enhances diversity of the Department’s faculty.
5.    Experience teaching Biological Education to undergraduate and graduate students.
6.    Experience directing research projects involving graduate and undergraduate students.
7.    Successful grant writing experience.
