Senior Clinical Ethicist and Assistant Professor @ Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

The Department of Bioethics (DoB) at the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School  of Medicine invites applications for the position of Senior Clinical Ethicist in the Center for  Biomedical Ethics (CBME) at The MetroHealth System (MHS) and Assistant Professor (non tenure track) in the DoB at CWRU.  

MHS is Cuyahoga County’s safety-net hospital system, serving more than 300,000 patients,  two-thirds of whom are uninsured or covered by Medicare or Medicaid, and is a teaching  hospital for CWRU. MHS is home to the county’s most experienced Level 1 Trauma Center  and its renowned American Burn Association-verified adult and pediatric critical care burn  center. MHS also provides medical care at the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center and is  the County’s medical home for children in foster care. The CBME at MHS has a longstanding history of outstanding service, education, outreach,  and research. Its clinical ethics consult service is very active, with over 400 consults in 2024.  The CBME also maintains robust educational programming, including monthly hospital-wide  Bioethics Grand Rounds, many regularly scheduled ethics lectures and presentations,  including nursing orientation, correctional health care staff orientation, general practice  dentistry residency ethics didactics, and Coffee with Clinical Ethics, semi-monthly  discussions promoting engagement between clinical ethics and nursing. The CBME also  welcomes rotating undergraduate, graduate, and medical students as observers and leads  discussions about ethical issues students encounter. The CBME’s nationally- and  internationally-recognized faculty have expertise in clinical ethics, burn ethics, correctional  health care ethics, advance care planning outreach, capacity and autonomy, and medical  facilitation.  

Applicants must have a terminal degree (PhD, JD, MD, DO, etc.) at the time of appointment.  The successful candidate will have a strong record of clinical ethics consultation experience  in addition to being an outstanding clinical educator, accomplished scholar, and motivated  collaborator, who is prepared to contribute to MHS’s mission and support its highly diverse  patient population.  

This position will be based in the CBME at MHS, and a significant majority of the successful  candidate’s efforts will be dedicated to clinical ethics consultation, clinical education,  community outreach, and related scholarship. In addition, there will be some opportunities  for participation in the CWRU DoB, which has teaching programs at the undergraduate,  graduate, and medical school levels.  

The successful candidate will (after an appropriate on-boarding and training period):  

● Serve as the senior clinical ethics consultant on-call, assist with consult review and  quality control, and help train junior clinical ethicists.  

● Develop and deliver clinical bioethics educational and outreach programs  ● Contribute to CBME research and scholarship  

● Attend and participate in relevant CBME and MHS meetings and assist with various  administrative tasks 

The expected start date for this position is July 1, 2025.
