This position incorporates teaching and lab support duties. The employee will teach one section of an undergraduate lab course per semester. Associated responsibilities include collaborating with the course teaching team to design and test new lab activities and to create and grade assignments; managing the course Canvas site; providing office hours for students in the course; preparing supplies for experiments; setting up and taking down the lab classroom; and supervising/mentoring undergraduate TAs for the course. The lab support duties will serve courses in the program in general, including 100- and 200-level, post-baccalaureate pre-med lab courses, and possibly other courses depending on the staffing and needs of the program. Associated responsibilities include ordering and preparing supplies for experiments, and general maintenance of supplies and equipment.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Serve as instructor of record for one section of an undergraduate 100- or 200-level teaching lab per semester which includes classroom time, grading, and office hours. Attend class component of the course, as needed, to complement teaching duties.
  • Provide instructional support for other sections of teaching labs, including grading assistance, running teaching workshops, troubleshooting experimental issues and responding to individual questions in-lab, and holding office hours.
  • Work as part of a team to develop teaching lab curriculum and collaborate in department-wide decisions around curriculum. Design and co-create lab manuals and weekly hand-outs. Maintain the course Canvas site for one undergraduate course per semester.
  • Prepare course-specific reagents for lab experiments including chemical solutions, media, and organisms. Maintain and update records for lab prep. Set up and transition classroom between lab sections. Organize and supervise undergraduate teaching assistants (TAs) for 100-level courses.

  • Coordinate service of equipment, monitor inventory of and order shared supplies, and participate and contribute to departmental discussions around these issues.

 

Education:

Required: Bachelor of Arts or Science degree and a graduate degree (minimum Master’s level), at least one of which is in biology or a related field

Preferred: Bachelor of Arts or Science degree and Master’s or above, both in biology or a related field

 

Professional Experience:

 

Required: 

  • 1 year research lab experience which may have been as an undergraduate student, as part of their graduate degree, or other position.
  • Experience in disciplines related to the assigned core courses.
  • Proficient at basic experimental design, laboratory skills, scientific writing, and data analysis.

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching or tutoring college or advanced high school level molecular and cellular biology.
  • Experience managing classes in an online learning management system. Experience managing student or peer workers.
