The Chaoui Fellowship

A former colleague of a Qiming US partner and a true friend to the firm, Mohamed Chaoui, recently passed away following a battle with lung cancer. He has inspired us to create a rolling fellowship to help develop MBA, MD, Ph.D., PharmD or other advanced degree students with a unique Qiming US experience. Our 2019 fellowship program is now open for applications.

Mohamed’s multi-company and multi-national career included banking, M&A, corporate finance, business development, general management overseeing biopharma affiliates, and for UCB, was instrumental in catalyzing the growth of their China operations. Mohamed was quick to understand early in his career that biotech and biomedical firms, many of which were venture-backed, could provide the means to discover, develop and commercialize transformational products. He had a daring spirit, boundless courage, abundant creativity, passion for pursuing innovation, and most importantly, a clear sense of purpose to patients. For any of us that had the chance to work with him, his impact will never fade.

For these reasons, we have created a fellowship to honor our colleague and friend. We commit to an experience that will provide a glimpse at how we work, help us answer important questions, gain insight into company creation, work side-by-side with very talented people and have a memorable experience.

Qualifications

• Passion for healthcare innovation and strong desire to explore the venture capital and start-up world

• Enrolled in or recently completed a Ph.D., M.D., PharmD, and/or MBA degree with a focus in life sciences (required)

• Experience in a business setting beneficial (e.g. consulting, BD, finance)

• Self-starter, ability to identify creative solutions independently

• Comfortable working across several simultaneous work streams

• Ability to analyze a healthcare business from multiple angles. Comfortable

  reading scientific publications, evaluating intellectual property, exploring

  competitive landscapes, and debating clinical or financing strategies

• Strong communication and presentation skills

• Fast learner with ability to get up to speed in technical and business areas

  outside core experience

• Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint

• Enthusiastic, intellectually curious, humble, and hard-working

We welcome candidates that may not have all of the desired qualifications, but can demonstrate the intelligence and enthusiasm to master them quickly.

Responsibilities

• Conduct due diligence on potential investments independently and as part of core Qiming US team

• Present at internal investment committee as contributor to investment decisions

• Lead sector analysis / opportunity landscaping (scientific, regulatory, clinical, IP)

  to identify new potential investment areas based on emerging research

• Evaluate China opportunities for current and potential investment companies

• Strategic and operational support to portfolio companies, as required

• Source potential investment opportunities
