[PGE/DMS] Update from Roz Segal, and the DMS office

April 9, 2020

Dear DMS Students,

I hope that you are all coping in the face of the great challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, and that you are staying safe and are hunkered down. I know that you that you are working hard to continue making progress toward your degrees in spite of the tremendous challenges, and you are probably overwhelmed with emails and often conflicting information. While I have been hesitant to add to the volume of email, I do want you to stay connected. And so I am sending this email now with information that you may have missed.

  • I want to thank you all for your flexibility as classes, PQEs, DACs and Dissertation defenses transitioned to on line format. Overall this has gone well. To prevent Zoom Bombers please do not post zoom links on public websites or twitter. Please let us know of other issues so we can try to address them.

  • We have added a set of on line, credit-bearing courses for the spring. You should have received a survey about this, which must be completed by Sunday, April 5th.

  • Professional development events have moved online. You can find these and other information at the career navigator

  • Please talk with your advisors and program about the best way to use this time. Is there a skill you know will be needed (Bio-informatics, coding, image analysis?) that you might develop now? Can you read in a specific area? start on a fellowship application? Write the introduction for your thesis? Explore future career or internship options? Discuss this and develop a plan that will position you well to make progress once we return.

  • Most importantly, please take care of your physical and mental health. For your physical health please stay at home and wash your hands frequently. Mental health is just as challenging: and there are a number of resources available, here and here. Please also check in with your program administrators and let them know where you are hunkered down.

  • I know that many programs and GSAS are having regular zoom meetings. We have not done so across DMS, but can do so if that would be helpful to you. We are here for you.

Take care; stay safe, stay connected.

Roz Segal
