STEM Education Postdoctoral Fellowship @ California State University Monterey Bay

California State University Monterey Bay is seeking to fill the position of STEM Education Postdoctoral Researcher. 

The position will report to the Associate Dean of the College of Science, and operate as part of the STEM Education Working Group to support faculty in the assessment, development and revision of key STEM curriculum and pedagogy. 

 

Through the support of a U.S. Department of Education HSI STEM and Articulation grant, CSUMB has been able to focus significant resources toward expanding the number of Course-Based Research experiences (CUREs) on our campus. We are now looking for a researcher to help us collate and expand upon what we understand about the impact of this programming as a means to inform future instructional, curricular and program development. We are looking for a colleague with experience in developing and assessing science educational materials and curriculum, who can add to the academic body of knowledge around the value of HIPs on the STEM student experience for Hispanic and Minority-Serving Institutions, such as CSUMB.

 

This position requires an extensive knowledge of: higher education pedagogies, especially evidence-based learning strategies as applied to teaching STEM curricula. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of the STEM education literature, instructional best practices, and curret theories related to student self-efficacy, resilience, study skills, goal setting, and time management. Knowledge and experience with pedagogical research methodology, data analysis and interpretation, and communication of results are also expected.

 

Essential duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following

·           Serve as an internal consultant and evaluator for STEM Course Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), First Year Seminars (FYS) which include a research component, and select group and individual Undergraduate Research experiences;

·           Serve as a pedagogical resource for faculty and staff on matters related to curriculum development, teaching practices, and program evaluation;

·           Provide feedback to STEM faculty on research and evaluation design;

·           Work to promote institutional transformation in undergraduate STEM education;

·           Contribute to peer reviewed publications;

·           Collaborate with CSUMB researchers on internally and externally funded projects in the fields of STEM Education, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and High Impact Practices for Student Success;

·           Conduct research, mentor undergraduate students, develop an independent research agenda, and engage with the community of STEM researchers;

·           Analyze existing data sets across programs to inform program development and student success, while both leveraging interdisciplinary collaboration and evaluating and integrating HIPs across STEM curricula to support student success

 

Minimum Qualifications:        

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a STEM field, STEM education, education, higher education, or related social science with a focus on STEM education. Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: 

• Expertise in mixed methods research

• Experience with educational assessment and program evaluation

• Experience with STEM teaching and active learning strategies

• Experience creating and assessing learning objectives (rubrics)

• Experience with curriculum development for undergraduate research

• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituents (faculty, students, and administrators)

• Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgement in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues

• Experience in team building, communication, and interpersonal skills

• Committed to equity-oriented collaborative research to promote student success.
 

The monthly salary range for this position is: $5,000 - $6,667.  The University Corporation at Monterey Bay also provides access to affordable campus housing, Employee Housing.
