Biology Education Postdoctoral Fellowship @ University of Alabama at Birmingham

The Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is pleased to announce an opening for a post-doctoral fellow in biology education to commence no later than August 1, 2019. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in biology or a Ph.D. in biology education, science education, or curriculum & instruction (or related field) with graduate level training in the biological sciences. Individuals who are currently ABD but who will possess their degree prior to the anticipated start date will also be considered. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to collaborate with departmental faculty as well as with colleagues from across two and four-year institutions nationwide on an NSF-funded RCN-UBE initiative that seeks to propagate evidence-based practices like active-learning and course-based undergraduate research experiences. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to design and conduct their own research studies, mentor undergraduate and graduate research assistants, gain experience in writing education grants, and teach one biology course per semester at the local community college.

 

In addition to the required qualifications described above, preference will be given to candidates with the following minimum qualifications:

 

  • Expertise in one or more areas of Cellular/Molecular Biology, Organismal Biology, Ecology, or Evolution
  • Experience developing and facilitating faculty professional development opportunities at the post-secondary level
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting mixed-methods education research studies or familiarity with qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • Teaching experience at the collegiate level

 

The post-doctoral position is a one-year (12 month) appointment with a competitive salary of $47,500, including the availability of fringe benefits. Renewability of the position is contingent upon continued progress toward grant objectives and can be extended for an additional year.
