# Teaching Faculty Positions @ Simon Fraser University (CAN) February 26, 2020 Teaching Faculty Positions The Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University invites applications for two continuing teaching faculty appointments at the rank of Lecturer. Lecturer in Genetics and Microbiology The successful applicant will be a dedicated and innovative teacher, responsible for instructing courses in genetics and microbiology. Areas of expertise should include microbiology, genetics, and molecular biology. Note minimum qualifications below. Lecturer in Plant Biology and Plant Physiology The successful applicant will be a dedicated and innovative teacher, responsible for instructing courses in plant biology and plant physiology. Areas of expertise should include the biology of plants and algae, from structural and physiological perspectives. Additional expertise in biology of fungi and/or developmental biology of plants would be an asset. Note minimum qualifications below. Individuals must have the ability to instruct both lecture and laboratory courses, across all years, using modern, evidence-based teaching approaches. All lecturers in the department also contribute to our first-year laboratory courses (for majors and nonmajors), and there may be opportunities to develop and teach additional courses, depending on personal interest and departmental needs. Excellent communication and relevant laboratory skills are essential. Leadership in curriculum development, training and supervision of teaching assistants, and contributions to department and university service are expected. Applicants should be collaborative and able to work well in a team that includes other faculty members, graduate student teaching assistants, and technical support staff. The successful applicant will join a large, congenial, community-engaged department that has a broad teaching and research mission with 43 faculty, including 9 teaching faculty. We teach and train about 600 undergraduate majors in three concentrations (Cells, Molecules & Physiology; Ecology, Evolution & Conservation; Open), have close teaching collaborations with other life science departments in the Faculty of Science, and also serve many students from other Faculties. Minimum qualifications include a Masters degree in a relevant area of biological sciences, plus teaching experience in post-secondary biology courses. Preferred qualifications include experience as a lecturer and/or lab instructor (with primary responsibility for instruction) in a breadth of biology courses, with a focus on the areas relevant to each position. We strongly prefer applicants with demonstrated qualifications and past success in finding innovative solutions to challenges in teaching, course design, and curriculum development.
