Position Summary

The Curriculum Developer will develop inquiry-based labs for natural sciences courses as part of a Sherman Fairchild STEM grant focused on integrating scientific technology, experiential learning, and quantitative reasoning into the science curriculum to improve student retention and success in STEM at New Mexico Highlands University, a Hispanic Serving Institution. The Curriculum Developer will support STEM faculty by designing labs and lab manuals for NMHU that introduce key scientific concepts and involve students in current scientific questions, empirical observation, and the use of new technologies to visualize and interpret data.

The Developer will oversee the library of equipment and technology and manage an online schedule system for reserving equipment. Additionally, the Developer will collaborate with faculty members by providing pedagogical workshops and trainings, conducting in-lab observations of faculty, and occasionally co-teaching the designed inquiry-based labs. The Developer will also conduct curriculum mapping of STEM foundational skills and expectations for science graduates by gathering input from hosted discussions with STEM faculty members, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and the STEM student center. This is a term 12-month appointment.

Duties and Responsibilities

STEM Curriculum Design

• Design inquiry-based labs for introductory science courses in collaboration with faculty, emphasizing place-based science, quantitative reasoning, and data analysis and interpretation and utilizing new laptops and sensors.
• Develop inquiry-based lab manuals for various STEM disciplines at NMHU.
• Conduct curriculum mapping for STEM disciplines by working closely with the STEM faculty to revise scaffolding of foundational content and non-content skills across STEM, especially focusing on quantitative reasoning skills and bridging lower and upper level lab experiences.

Collaborate & Train STEM Faculty

• Occasionally co-teach STEM inquiry-based labs with faculty members to fully develop new, effective, and impactful lab manuals.
• Design and host workshops and trainings throughout the year for faculty on high impact practices to increase student engagement and success in the lab, including trainings on student-centered, place-based, inquiry-based, collaborative, and experiential learning, as well as practical trainings for implementing inquiry labs with new equipment purchased through this grant.
• Hold regular meetings with STEM departments and disciplines to assess current teaching needs and interests, gather information for curriculum mapping, and inform faculty of new progress in lab design and implementation.
• Host biweekly STEM teaching and curriculum circles and facilitate discussions about STEM curriculum design, teaching, and learning.
• Collaborate with the NMHU Center for Teaching Excellence and ARMAS (the STEM student center) on faculty workshops and student success data collection.
• Observe faculty members teaching classes in STEM labs to provide formative feedback and gather information for developing new customized inquiry-based labs.
• Meet regularly with the Dean/PI to update progress on the grant objectives.

Coordinate STEM lab resources & collaborations

• Coordinate a library of grant purchased lab equipment that is accessible by STEM faculty.
• Build and maintain an online system for faculty to check out equipment from the equipment library.

Grant Program Communication & Tracking

• Maintain records of faculty and course use of developed labs, grant equipment, and participation in trainings and meetings for grant reporting.
• Develop and maintain the program's social media presence and coordinate program news with Public Relations at NMHU.
• Assist the PI in writing reports for grant evaluation.
• Take advantage of opportunities to develop new grant proposals to continue the inquiry labs program or conduct novel research in STEM education.

Minimum Job Requirements

• MA, MS, or M. Ed in a STEM field, higher education, or related areas.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Two or more years of related experience in STEM teaching or curriculum development at the college level.
• Experience developing science or math curricular materials for higher education as a teacher or specialist.
• Experience leading a team or collaborative project.
• Experience serving diverse community and/or student populations.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD or EdD in any of following fields: science, math, engineering, higher education, or related areas.
• Experience developing inquiry-based science lab materials for higher education.
• Experience designing, developing, and/or presenting STEM relevant pedagogy/andragogy workshops for higher education faculty.
• Experience providing in-class observation feedback of teachers.
• Familiarity with AAAS Vision and Change or PULSE guidelines for life science education.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate and relate positively and effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
• 1-2 years of direct experience working with students in higher education.
• 1-2 years of experience organizing and/or managing a project or program.
• Experience with data collection and record keeping.
• Experience with social media and/or website communication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Outstanding organization and communication skills.
• Ability to relate positively and effectively with students, community partners, staff, and faculty.
• Skill and expertise in working with higher education faculty, staff, and students.
• Strong computer skills and thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and online media tools.
• Ability in the use of technologies and/or strategies to coordinate communication and logistics for several groups of faculty members, the teaching center, and the STEM student success center.

Working Environment

Pay Rate: $48,000 Salary
