The Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute is a critical component of a global UCSF initiative in Precision Medicine, which seeks to aggregate and integrate vast, disparate datasets to advance understanding of biological processes, determine mechanisms of disease, and inform diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Since its formation in 2015, the Institute has established a cohort of 50 affiliated faculty who represent a diverse array of departments drawing from UCSF’s four top-ranked professional schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy) and Graduate Division.  BCHSI fosters collaborations within the UCSF Medical Center, named among the nation’s premier medical institutions for 15 consecutive years, as well as the statewide UC system, including 6 academic medical centers (Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco) comprising UC Health.  More information can be found at https://bakarinstitute.ucsf.edu/.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, in the School of Medicine, is actively engaged in clinical, research and training activities and is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation for NIH funding for orthopaedic research.  The Department has over 90 full time faculty, 28 other academic appointees, 8-10 postdoctoral scholars, and over 40 clinical trainees.  Our departments mission is pioneering musculoskeletal discovery and innovative care to transform lives.  More details can be found at https://orthosurgery.ucsf.edu/, including our 2019 departmental research report https://media.orthosurgery.ucsf.edu/documents/UCSFOrthoResearch2019.pdf
