JOB DESCRIPTION
Every summer, the Broad Institute collaborates with the MIT Office of Engineering Outreach
Programs through their MITES program. This initiative at MIT attracts top students from across
the nation to engage in rigorous programs introducing rising high school seniors to the values of
advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
We are looking for an outstanding instructor to teach a group of 16 exceptional high school
students in a 6-week summer genomics course at the Broad Institute that focuses on the
human microbiome. Students in this course conduct lab work (e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis, and
sequencing), read primary literature, maintain a laboratory notebook, analyze sequencing data,
meet with Broad scientists to discuss career paths, and present their findings in an oral
presentation to the greater MIT and Broad communities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Work closely with Diversity, Education, and Outreach staff to design MITES course
curriculum and schedule to promote active learning
Order all necessary laboratory equipment and supplies
Introduce and direct lab activities
Provide guidance and necessary materials to students during study periods and office
hours
Responsible for lab readiness and upkeep
Prepare and assign class materials, weekly problem sets, assessments and answer
guides
Help students design and deliver scientific posters
Create an open and positive learning environment that encourages students to ask
questions and be active participants
Use effective forms of communication (via office hours, email, or phone) to discuss
individual academic challenges that students might be facing with course material
Attend safety training, staff trainings, regular staff meetings, and some special events
Complete mid-term reports, final evaluations, and program survey
Submit all course materials and reports by the end of the program
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in biology, microbiology, cell biology, or other relevant scientific
discipline required. PhD preferred
Experience with molecular biology and/or microbiology protocols and laboratory
equipment required
Experience teaching, tutoring or training in college level curriculum/instructions
Experience preparing and leading a laboratory course preferred.
Experience communicating complex scientific concepts to a lay audience
Must demonstrate strength in oral and written communication, be able to multi-task,
and work both independently and collaboratively with a positive attitude
Flexibility to work occasional evenings
IMPORTANT LOGISTICS
This is an MIT temporary position running from the end of May through the first week of
August and is not a Broad employment position.
MITES will run from June 18 - July 31, 2020. The instructor will start in early June.
Part-time, 20-25 hours per week
Instructor must complete Broad Safety Training on a Monday before the start of the
course
$25.50/hour compensation
