Mentors Needed for Virtual Summer Research Program

March 28, 2022

Prospective MD-PhD/DO-PhD applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in science and medicine (URiM) experience significant barriers to applying to combined degree programs. This problem has been significantly exacerbated by the disruption of research activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Virtual Summer Research Program (VSRP) from the American Physician Scientist Association (ASPA) is working to bridge this gap, and we need your help!

With your help, we can provide more opportunities to those whose research experience is limited by socio-economic factors to increase diversity in dual degree programs and ultimately the physician-scientist workforce. In 2020, we paired 150+ mentors, principal investigators and graduate students with premedical and pre-graduate trainees. In 2021, we paired 70. In 2022, we are hoping to pair another 50-100 URiMs with an anticipation of 600+ applicants.

We are asking graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and principal investigators to volunteer as mentors for this virtual research experience from June 13 to August 5, 2022. Visit https://www.physicianscientists.org/page/VSRP-2022 to learn more and sign up. The deadline is May 1 11:59pm ET.
