In 1991, the Smith Family Foundation created a grants program to support promising junior faculty who were beginning to establish their own independent laboratories and research programs. Since 1992, the Program has funded 181 scientists for a total investment of $38.3 million.
Applications may focus on all fields of basic biomedical science. Investigators in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry and engineering) with biomedical research projects are also encouraged to apply.

Award Amount:
$300,000 over three years, inclusive of 5% institutional overhead
Eligibility:
• Full-time faculty whose Assistant Professor appointment began between 10/1/18 and 4/1/22
• Preliminary applications will be accepted from eligible faculty at any nonprofit academic institution, hospital, or free standing nonprofit biomedical research facility in Massachusetts
• Preliminary applications will also be accepted from Brown University and Yale University
• Women and people of color are encouraged to apply
