Career Counselor, Graduate Students @ Marquette University

Position Overview

Provide individual and group career counseling/job search coaching to graduate/professional students in order to help them make informed career decisions and prepare for an effective job searches. The person in this position will use techniques and presenting resources appropriate for each client’s stage in the career development process. It will be expected that the Counselor will work with students to translate their resumes, curriculum vitae, or other materials to speak to non-academic and academic recipients.

The Career Counselor, Graduate Students will also coordinate implementation of career programming efforts. This includes career education and networking programs, career fairs, and presentation requests.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide individual and group career coaching sessions with Graduate/professional on-campus and online students
2. Serve as counselor on duty to handle urgent career questions and provide back-up drop-in coverage for graduate students
3. Work with Associate Deans and Career Services Center to develop and promote career services programs that will help graduate/professional students explore and plan career options (e.g., career boot camp; Graduate Futures Week)
4. Conduct trainings, workshops, lectures, presentations to enhance student competitiveness for rewarding careers (resume development, interviewing prep, networking, salary negotiations, writing cover letters, job search strategies, etc.)
5. Work closely with Chairs, Directors of Graduate Studies, faculty, current graduate students, and alumni to assess career needs and career exploration with/for our graduate students; work to help programs establish internships for their graduate students
6. Work closely with the Director of the Incubator, who develops new graduate programs, to understand employment trends in different areas
7. Working with the Office of Economic Engagement and the Career Services Center, establish and maintain contacts with potential employers to both promote the hiring of our students, understand the needs of the employers, and serve as a liaison between Departments and employers to facilitate transfer of this information.
8. Develop and maintain newsletter for alumni to go out 2x/yr
9. Work across campus to identify and help develop continuing education opportunities
10. Coordinate with the Marquette Mentors program to place graduate students with mentors
11. Track career outcomes of our students through coordination with OIRA on the First-Destination survey for graduate/professional students
12. Participate in professional development opportunities to be well-informed regarding current career counseling, employment, and diversity and equity topics
13.Assist with career diversity work in the Graduate School as needed
14.Assist with event planning within the Graduate School and other units as needed
15.Review and update career resources annually, or as needed
16. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum of a Master’s degree.

 

At least 2 years of experience during or after graduate school in Career Services, Human Resources, or a related field.

Knowledge of all career counseling topics including: career exploration and decision-making; interest, skill, and work values identification/development; internship, job, graduate/professional, post-graduate service search; post-doc search; resume/curriculum vitae, cover letter, personal statement writing; interviewing; and other career topics

 

Knowledge of and ability to effectively use helping skills in individual career counseling appointments

 

Proficient in use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

 

Able to learn SharePoint; Qualtrics; Smart Classroom technology; Marquette Career Network (PeopleGrove); ImaginePhD; and Handshake (online career platform) including troubleshoot and/or report problems, and teach others how to use system

 

Articulate thoughts and express ideas effectively using oral, written and non-verbal communication skills as well as listening for meaning to gain understanding in person and in writing

 

Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively with others in a team setting through shared responsibility, empathy and respect; seek and appreciate the viewpoints of those from diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, religions and lifestyles

 

Exercise sound reasoning to analyze issues, synthesize information, make decisions and solve problems; the ability to think critically and strategically to develop original ideas and innovative solutions

 

Demonstrate integrity, resilience, accountability and ethical behavior; the ability to take initiative, maintain effective work habits (prioritize, plan and manage work) to produce high quality results and project a professional presence

 

Plan and execute events including, but not limited to: group advising sessions, graduate student week events, alumni gatherings, etc.

Some travel maybe required for conferences, employer meetings, and other career-related reasons

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Completion of PhD

 

Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred

 

Appreciation for and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds

 

Experience working with graduate students

 

Experience in a college career services and/or human resources setting

 

Understanding of student development and career development theories

 

Experience coordinating programs and events
