The Biochemistry/Molecular Life Scientist holds an academic-year appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The incumbent leads development and delivery of innovative approaches for addressing discipline-based education research in biochemistry and the molecular life sciences, requiring critical thinking, experimental-testing, molecular modeling, and inferential logic.
The incumbent is expected to maintain a high impact, nationally and internationally recognized, externally supported research, extension, and teaching program contributing as an effective scholar and citizen to the integrated land-grant mission of the Department of Biochemistry and IANR, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. Research conducted by the incumbent contributes to discipline-based education research programs at UNL, and emphasizes linking teaching and research in developing novel pedagogical strategies in education research to be deployed in the classroom and laboratory. Contributions to the teaching and extension missions are expected to average 0.70 FTE, including instruction in core biochemistry courses (BIOC401/801 (General Biochemistry) and BIO401L (General Biochemistry Lab)) that serve the broader life sciences community, and including delivery to non-traditional learners, e.g., on-line courses for continuing education, as well as recruiting, advising, and mentoring. Specific course assignments may change according to program needs. Note: 50% of this position is targeted toward formal learning environments.
Extension and teaching programming will be integrated to collaboratively develop educational strategies in the molecular life sciences for K-12 schools and non-formal learning environments, resulting in national leadership in youth education in the molecular life sciences. The incumbent will develop and lead efforts to increase awareness and interest in careers related to science literacy, including on-line modules, experiential programs (e.g., boot camps to community-driven programs in the molecular life sciences), computational modeling, and strategies to enhance critical thinking through student writing and presentations.
In the area of work covered by the position the incumbent is expected to seek and establish effective disciplinary and trans-disciplinary collaborations including integration with local stakeholders, complementary research groups, extension teams, educational programs, and other partners. The incumbent is expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university levels.

1. Ph.D. or equivalent in biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular life science education or closely related field.
2. A minimum of one year of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.
3. Experience in teaching biochemistry and the development of novel pedagogical tools.
4. Evidence of scholarship in biochemistry and/or molecular biology through publications and presentations.
1. Experience in teaching in biochemistry and/or molecular biology educational programs (lecture and/or laboratory).
2. Experience in working in science outreach, with a particular focus on K-12 students.
3. Evidence of engagement in biochemistry, molecular biology and/or cell biology societies at the national level.
4. Excellent communication skills
5. Ability to work cooperatively on multidisciplinary projects in advancing biochemistry and molecular life sciences education.
