Job Summary


The Assistant Dean will be supporting our GSBS faculty and staff while working from the Graduate School Dean’s Office. This person will be an acting Representative of our Graduate School which may require some domestic travel. This position will function to support existing recruitment and retention initiatives and develop complementary efforts to enhance the climate for diversity, inclusion, and equity in the GSBS and basic science programs at UTSW


Experience and Education


Ph.D. degree, preferably in a biomedical science, although persons with other doctoral degrees and substantial relevant experience may also be competitive. Three (3) to Five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience required.


Job Duties/Essential Functions


  1. Represent the Graduate School at regional and national conferences and at U.S. educational institutions with undergraduate and graduate students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in science to recruit applicants to GSBS PhD and postdoctoral fellowship programs and develop pipelines.
  2. Support outreach to local middle and high schools to expose diverse students to biomedical research careers.
  3. Support summer research programs that bring diverse high school students and undergraduates to UTSW laboratories.
  4. Support graduate student and postdoctoral fellow organizations that promote diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  5. Coordinate seminars by underrepresented scientists and other activities to enrich the campus climate for diversity and inclusion.
  6. Domestic travel for recruitment purposes once COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions permit.
  7. Work closely with GSBS faculty and staff, including the current Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, the Assistant Dean for Recruiting and Admissions, and the Assistant Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs.
  8. Partner with the Graduate Career Development Office to promote the recruitment, retention, and professional development of trainees and prepare them for a breadth of science-related careers.
  9. Collaborate with the UTSW Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, the UTSW Office of Faculty Diversity and Development, and the UTSW Office of Equity and Access to coordinate efforts to enrich the climate for diversity and inclusion, particularly with regard to basic science research.
  10. Work with graduate program directors, the admissions committee chair, program administrators, and other graduate school faculty.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work is performed primarily in office area, as well as in the field for recruiting and outreach duties. Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.


The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) Assistant Dean of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Affairs will serve to enhance access, representation, and the educational experience of underrepresented trainees, develop and implement institutional initiatives to expand the pool of qualified applicants to the graduate and postdoctoral programs, and play a crucial role in supporting UTSW’s overarching plan to diversify the campus community as a whole. This position will function to support existing recruitment and retention initiatives and develop complementary efforts to enhance the climate for diversity, inclusion, and equity in the GSBS and basic science at UTSW. In addition, a major goal of the expanded diversity and inclusion efforts of the GSBS is to increase faculty diversity by growing the pipeline as well as mentoring trainees for academic careers.




This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information
