[PGE PDD Webinar] Crafting an Effective Teaching Statement for a Faculty Job Search (Mitch McVey, Ph.D. - Tufts University)

Date:

Tuesday, July 28, 2020, 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Location:

Zoom - TBA

Candidates applying for faculty positions that involve classroom or laboratory instruction are usually asked to submit a teaching statement as part of their application materials. Teaching statements are also often required as part of promotion and tenure applications. Creating an effective teaching statement depends on your ability to convince readers that you have a well-formulated philosophy that motivates your teaching. In addition, your statement should be supported by concrete examples of effective teaching or mentoring.

Dr. Mitch McVey (Professor of Biology at Tufts University) will lead this workshop, introducing participants to the teaching statement and providing strategies for how to write one. This session will benefit individuals who have never written a teaching statement and those who are looking to revise a current statement. It is appropriate for MS students, PhD students, and postdocs.

As part of the workshop, we will:

- discuss the multiple purposes of a teaching statement

- examine questions that can serve as a starting point for writing a teaching statement

- read and evaluate teaching statements from successful job candidates

- describe how a teaching statement can serve as an organizing document for a teaching portfolio
