[PGE PDD Webinar] Crafting an Effective Research Statement for a Faculty Job Search (Davie Van Vactor, Ph.D. - Harvard Medical School)

Date:

Thursday, July 9, 2020, 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Location:

Zoom - TBA

Candidates applying for tenure-track faculty positions, in which they would be sustaining a research program, are required to submit a research statement as a part of their application materials.  Creating an effective research statement depends on a candidate's ability to convince a reader they not only have great ideas for novel research but also that they have the momentum and vision to warrant an institution's investment of time and resources to support this research program.

Dr. Davie Van Vactor (Professional of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School) will lead this session introducing participants to the research statement as a critical component of the academic job application.  Using examples of research statements from candidates successful in landing faculty positions, Dr. Van Vactor will overview

- a candidate's goals in writing a research statement

- standard features of a research statement, including organization and formatting

- how search committees evaluate/critique research statements to identify great candidates for interview and alignment with their institutional or department goals

- common challenges and pitfalls in developing these resources
