Countway Presents: Sharing Research: PrePrints & Data

Date:

Thursday, October 25, 2018, 4:00pm to 6:00pm

Location:

Countway Library, Ballard Room #503

Sponsored by Countway Library, Harvard Program in Therapeutic Science (HiTS), HMS Office of Basic Science

Growth of the open science movement has drawn significant attention to data sharing and availability across the scientific community. However, many researchers are encountering both technical (lack of resources and tools) and cultural (sensitive data, uncomfortable sharing) difficulties in the application of this exciting new approach.

In this session we will hear from four professionals on their work to bring new research into public view in order to increase scientific communication and discovery. Topics include preprints, or manuscripts posted online before the completion of journal-organized peer review; the HMS LINCS Project, in which cancer datasets are being shared; the Reich Lab, which works with ancient genomics data resources their lab creates and shares; and the Department of Health Care Policy, who tend to be creative in order to comply with funder requirements on data sharing.

In this interactive discussion, we will address the benefits of sharing research and data throughout the research lifecycle, concerns and challenges surrounding these practices, and new developments.

Speakers:

  • Catherine Luria, PhD, Scientific Program Manager, HMS LINCS Center, Harvard Program in Therapeutic Science
  • Shop Mallick, Bioinformatics Director, Reich Lab, Department of Genetics
  • Jessica Polka, PhD, Director, ASAPbio, Visiting Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Systems Biology
  • Caroline Wood, Manager of Data Security and Compliance, Department of Health Care Policy
