[Career Navigator Workshop] R3 (Research Rigor and Reproducibility) and Me; Introduction to Electronic Notebooks

Date:

Thursday, February 4, 2021, 4:00pm to 5:30pm

Location:

Zoom - TBA

PART 1: R3 and Me: A Toolkit for Rigorous and Reproducible Research (Jelena Patrnogić, PhD, HMS Curriculum Fellows Program)

4:00 PM - 4:45 PM

There is a reproducibility crisis in research.

In 2016, Nature reported results from a survey demonstrating that more than 70% of researchers have tried and failed to reproduce another scientist’s experiments, and more than half have failed to reproduce their own experiments (Baker, Nature 2016). These results are telling. But how do we approach this issue?

In this informational seminar we will discuss the importance of research rigor and reproducibility (R3). You will learn about the R3 effort at HMS, you will be introduced to a collection of resources that you can use in your research, and you will be provided with an example guide of various offerings across HMS to help you achieve R3 goals.

PART 2: Introduction to Electronic Notebooks: Platforms & Best Practices (Julie Goldman, HMS Countway Library)

4:45 PM - 5:30 PM

Where did I put that piece of paper? When did I do that experiment? Where did I save that data file? If you frequently find yourself searching for a critical piece of information you jotted down as you performed your experiment, trying to remember when you did what, or scouring your hard drive to find the right file, it may be time to revisit how you keep your research notes.

There are multiple tools available to help you document your work and progress. This tutorial will introduce good digital data management practices and highlight platforms to optimize your final “data package” to fulfill research quality and reproducibility requirements.
