One of the most challenging aspects of working as a scientist is communicating your work to those outside your specific discipline. By focusing primarily on writing for the widest audience possible, the general public, this workshop will help participants to communicate more effectively in all contexts. No preparation or reading is required for the first workshop, but, for later classes, writing projects will be assigned; most of the workshop time will be devoted to reading, editing, and discussing the resulting pieces. In our background readings and discussions, we will explore a few different genres of popular science writing, read and analyze some classic pieces in each genre, and talk about generally applicable strategies for communicating clearly and concisely.

This 75-minute workshop is a standalone workshop on the topic.  Participants will be invited to participate in a longitudinal program, including three follow-up sessions spread over the Spring semester.
