Resiliency allows us to get back up as quickly and smoothly as possible when life takes unexpected or upsetting turns. Both as scientists and as humans, we can view building resiliency as a type of personal and professional development. This talk will discuss why to focus on creating support networks, when to use empathy and storytelling to increase our resiliency, and how we can each contribute to making academia a more inclusive and healthy space for academics of all levels. The session will include time for discussion and an active workshop through which participants will reflect on their resilience and connect with others through shared experiences.

Speaker Susanna L Harris, PhD, believes in building communities through communication. As a recent graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Susanna works in science marketing and engagement. Susanna founded PhD Balance to break the stigma around mental illness in higher education and create spaces where grad students can have open conversations around their most difficult challenges. She hosts and presents public speaking events about mental health, academic support, and science communication.
